A Guide for Leaders on Mastering Time Wisely Between Holidays

As an educator, school leader, and district partner, I know the feeling of gratitude that happens right before Thanksgiving break!! I also know the anxiety that persists after the break because there’s so much to do with so little time.

With the constant challenge of figuring out how to enhance student performance, the period between Thanksgiving and the Winter holiday is perfect for principals to strategically plan for second semester.

The Blueprint: Strategy Mapping vs. Everything Else…

Two contrasting approaches often emerge: the strategic method, characterized by meticulous planning and targeted interventions, and the more spontaneous "winging it" approach.

Let's delve into the benefits of employing a strategic mindset over the unpredictable nature of improvisation in the quest to elevate student success.

Tip #1 - The Art of Clear and Achievable Goals

Strategic Approach: Setting clear, measurable goals enables educators to tailor their methods to specific learning outcomes, ensuring a focused and purposeful curriculum.

  • Practical Application: Specify 3 target areas that must be true to ensure students experience academic success daily. Create a road map that defines what this looks like, sounds like, and feels like for leaders, teachers and students. Train stakeholders by laying out the vision with the clear road map.

  • Pro Tip: Be sure to indicate how you will inspect (track + monitor) progress.

Winging It: Without predefined objectives, educators risk missing crucial learning milestones, leading to a lack of direction and coherence in their teaching.

Tip #2 - The Power of Data Driven Decision Making

Strategic Approach: Utilizing data allows educators to identify areas of improvement, adapt strategies, and provide targeted support where it's most needed.

  • Practical Application: Create a system to collect data daily, weekly, and monthly to ensure you can identify gaps in a responsive manner.

  • Pro Tip: The frequent the data collection and refinement in practice, the stronger the impact.

Winging It: Relying solely on intuition may result in overlooking critical data points, hindering the ability to address individual student needs effectively.

Tip #3 - Designing Individual Learning with Precision

Strategic Approach: Recognizing the diverse needs of students and implementing differentiated instruction caters to various learning styles, fostering a more inclusive and supportive learning environment.

  • Practical Application: This is the perfect time to support diverse learning groups, if you have not implemented a structured system already.

  • Pro Tip: Bring in the expertise of a trusted advisor to analyze the effectiveness of your planning to ensure the instructional practices identified meet the needs for diverse learners.

Winging It: Random approaches may not accommodate the unique requirements of each student, potentially leaving some learners behind or unchallenged. If we are not planning for diverse learning, let’s assume that it is not happening.

Tip #4 - Brushing Up On Classroom Management

Strategic Approach: Developing a comprehensive classroom management plan minimizes disruptions, maximizes instructional time, and creates a positive learning atmosphere.

  • Practical Application: Prepare to reset behavioral expectations with teachers, students, and parents as a refresher.

  • Pro Tip: Ensure all stakeholders are aware of what successful engagement looks like with positive reinforcements rather than punitive measures. Implement this system on the first days after the holiday break and include in parent newsletters.

Winging It: Lack of a structured management strategy may lead to chaos in the classroom, hindering the learning experience for all students.

Tip #5 - Progress Through Professional Development

Strategic Approach: Ongoing professional development (PD) opportunities empower educators to stay abreast of the latest teaching methodologies, incorporating evidence-based practices into their classrooms.

  • Practical Application: Create a professional development calendar that aligns with the data driven instruction and diverse learning tasks you outlined above.

  • Pro Tip: Share an overview with your leadership team, teachers, and students so they understand the direction you will take to drive success. The more you share and train on your plan, the stronger your investment from your stakeholders.

Winging It: Neglecting professional growth may result in stagnant teaching methods, limiting the ability to adapt to evolving educational landscapes and student needs.

Tip #6 - Creating Vibrant Partnerships with Parents

Strategic Approach: Building strong partnerships with parents through regular communication and involvement fosters a collaborative environment that positively impacts student performance.

  • Practical Application: Communicate regularly with parents and gather their insight to foster allegiance and partnership. Keeping parents in-the-know through weekly newsletters, automated messages, and videos helps to form partnerships.

  • Pro Tip: Don't forget to ask parents for feedback to see how they view success.

Winging It: Inconsistent communication may lead to misunderstandings and hinder the development of a supportive network involving both educators and parents.

The strategic approach to enhancing student performance in K-12 education provides a roadmap for success, aligning instructional methods with specific goals and individual student needs. While spontaneity has its place, the consistency and purpose offered by a strategic mindset contribute significantly to the holistic development of students and the overall success of the educational ecosystem.
